The sanctuary of Saint George of Malesina<\/strong> is located one kilometer northeast of Malesina<\/a> on the Aetolimni peninsula.<\/p>\n\n

The monastery was founded in the 11th century AD<\/strong> , by two monks from Mount Athos<\/a> according to tradition. It was initially dedicated to the Virgin Mary<\/a> and after the 17th century<\/strong> to Saint George<\/a> .<\/p>\n\n

The earthquake<\/a> of 1894<\/a> destroyed most of it, only a part of the catholicon with rich iconography<\/a> was saved.<\/p>\n\n

The iconographies<\/a> belong to three periods, the Paleocene times<\/strong> (1261-1453), the late 16th<\/strong> and early 17th centuries<\/strong> .<\/p>\n\n

After its destruction by the earthquake, a new monastery was built nearby. Its inauguration took place on April 23, 1920<\/a> .<\/p>\n\n
