Holy Monastery of Saint George Malesina

The sanctuary of Saint George of Malesina is located one kilometer northeast of Malesina on the Aetolimni peninsula.

The monastery was founded in the 11th century AD , by two monks from Mount Athos according to tradition. It was initially dedicated to the Virgin Mary and after the 17th century to Saint George .

The earthquake of 1894 destroyed most of it, only a part of the catholicon with rich iconography was saved.

The iconographies belong to three periods, the Paleocene times (1261-1453), the late 16th and early 17th centuries .

After its destruction by the earthquake, a new monastery was built nearby. Its inauguration took place on April 23, 1920 .

During the years 1923-1925 , an ecclesiastical school operated in the monastery, but was then transferred to Lamia .

He had a rich library , consisting of 42 manuscripts which he donated to the National Library , and large property which was expropriated by the state in 1931 .

In 1988 , the monastery was staffed by nuns and now operates as a women’s monastery. It is celebrated on April 23 and June 2.

In 1992, the Cultural Association ” Group for the Rescue of the Byzantine Church of the Holy Monastery of Agios Georgios Malesina ” was founded, which, under the supervision of the 7th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities, carried out a series of works for the maintenance of the buildings of the old Monastery, the cleaning of its surrounding area from bushes, the removal of debris from the church and the repair of its roof.
